For a while, I experimented with India Ink. My experience in traditional art mostly had me working with materials that would allow me to rub out and correct without damaging the piece, India Ink carries the risk of not being able to fix the piece unless you start over.Â
This piece helped me understand how to control the color density and texture based on how much water is used. While perfection isn't the goal, the important thing is to gain a simplistic impression of the objects and their location; by regulating the water usage to the ink to give the impression of the object's surface.
A series of differently sized brushes, India Ink, and water were used on a large 18" x 24 sketchbook.
Gradually, the rough shapes of each item were sketched before the fine details were developed.
Finally, the outline in certain places was given a greater definition. More water and less ink showed the receding details while more ink and very little water helped to create the darker colors.
