This project required the creative depiction of a subject from three different sides; a triptych.
The subject of this drawing is the unique Canadian lake freighter Canadian Century, which was launched in 1967 to haul bulk cargo for the now long-defunct Upper Lakes Shipping Ltd. Great Lakes fleet.
I had a very cinematic approach to depicting each side of the ship. I wanted to show three different scenarios that the ship would encounter throughout its voyage.
The first scenario starting on the port side is during the day, albeit during rough weather.
The second scenario at the ship's bow is when the ship has to proceed with caution, as it passes through a thick fog bank and must use its navigation lights to guide her safely.
The third scenario concludes the ship's story at night, on her starboard side. The Canadian Century crashes through the waves, arriving at her port of call.
My model of the Canadian Century was used as a reference to depict the ship from all three sides.
A use of pastel and charcoal pencils on a large 18" x 24 sketchbook.
First, dark charcoals were rubbed and smoothened to create a foundation.
Secondly, the rough shape of the ship was added before the layers of colors were blocked in.
Thirdly, the colors and other fine details were developed.
Finally, the outline in certain places was given a greater definition.
