One of my favorite ocean liners is the S.S. United States, which entered service when America was too late to build an oceanliner that like the many liners of their neighbors in Europe carried themselves as symbols of national pride and prestige.Â
This entirely black-and-white piece was my first professional depiction of a ship.
A series of pastels and charcoal pencils were used on a large 18" x 24 sketchbook.
First, dark charcoals were rubbed and smoothened to create a foundation.
Secondly, the rough shape of the ship.
Thirdly, fine details were developed.
Finally, the outline in certain places was given a greater definition.
