I felt inspired to build a scale model of the Lake Freighter Canadian Century. While the model resembles the actual ship, some changes needed to be made due to size issues. At the time of building this model, I was limited to images that I could use as a source, and certain parts of the model were made inaccurately.
Currently, the model is undergoing renovations as better image sources were required.
The hull and main decking were made from thick card and half the card of toilet paper. The shape was built over an old parchment paper box with the top cut off.
Additional support was required to strengthen the integrity of the hull from strips of foam board.
Small raisin and ivory soap boxes were strengthened, and built off of to make the forward and aft superstructure.
Small bits such as pieces of cut toothpicks were used to make the bollards and parts of the navigation instruments, while pieces of paper clips were to make the antennas and one for the aft mast (with tape wrapped around it).
The ship's unloading mechanism and the winch were made from thick cardstock and toothpicks, while LEGO pieces allowed for mechanization.
Decals of the ship's name and company logo were created as closely as possible in Google Slides. The logo on the smokestack was made from cut pieces of tape that were painted on.
The ship was painted in acrylic paints with weathering added for realism.
