In the United States, it was common for the large railroads to own a fleet of tugboats to transport their railcars across large bodies of water when it was often impossible to build the required infrustructure.
While this picture may look like some place recognizable such as New York Harbor, the livery of this railway tug gives the location away. I wanted this piece to be set on the Saint Claire River between the U.S. state of Michigan and the Canadian province of Ontario, where railway tugs were a common sight.
While this particular company, Canadian National supposedly had a fleet of railway tugs: I decided that it would be interesting to redesign the livery of the railway tugs by making them resemble the livery of the locomotives that sport the colors of the company.
A series of pastel and charcoal pencils were used on a large 18" x 24 sketchbook.
First, dark charcoals were rubbed and smoothened to create a foundation.
Secondly, the rough shape of the tug, barge, and freight cars was added before the layers of colors were blocked in.
Thirdly, the colors and other fine details of the cityscape and water were developed.
Finally, the outline in certain places was given a greater definition.
